Astronomy - Carnegie Science Center
Total Costs: A $75.00 registration fee payable to Allegheny Intermediate Unit is due when Apprenticeship Application Page is mailed to our office.

This is a descriptive introduction to Astronomy. Many topics of study include: the celestial sphere, and the night sky, gravity and the dynamics of celestial bodies, telescopes and the nature of light, our moon, the planets and the sun, stars and their final outcome (white dwarfs, supernovae, pulsars and black holes) the milky way and other galaxies, the origins and fate of our universe and other solar systems. This program will include: development of a broad overview of current astronomical theory, familiarization with basic astronomical research techniques through participation in classroom exercises and discussions and demonstrations and interactions in a live digital planetarium environment.

The program will take place from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.

Instructor Bio: Dan Malerbo is the Program Development Coordinator for the Buhl Planetarium and he is also a staff educator at Carnegie Science Center where he has presented astronomy classes and workshops for educators, students and families for the past 25 years. He also teaches Introductory Astronomy at the Community College Of Allegheny County. Dan also is an educator with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Solar System Educator and Ambassador Program. He has written and co-written some of the Buhl’s most popular planetarium shows and currently write a weekly “Stargazing” and science column for The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Engineering - PA Society of Professional Engineers - Various sites
Total Costs: A $75.00 registration fee payable to Allegheny Intermediate Unit is due when Apprenticeship Application Page is mailed to our office.

Students will have the opportunity to meet with professional engineers in their workplace, and gain an understanding of the similarities and differences of the many areas of engineering, i.e., civil, electrical, mechanical, etc.

The Orientation date will be on September 21 at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit in Homestead, PA.

Students will have the opportunity to explore different areas of engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, which include civil, chemical, electrical and computer, engineering and public policy, environmental, materials science, and mechanical. Students will tour labs and see the cutting-edge technology that is being developed by faculty and students, and they will also have an opportunity to engage in hands-on experiments related to the research being done on campus.

Robotics - Carnegie Science Center

Pittsburgh has been called the robotics capital of America. Come learn about the basics of the science of robotics in the largest robotics exhibit in the U.S., meet with professionals in the field, and then see if you have what it takes to design, program, and deploy robots of your own. Sessions take place on Wednesdays at Carnegie Science Center from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 Noon.

UPMC Nursing and Healthcare Careers - Various UPMC Hospitals

Students will meet key leaders in the UPMC system and be introduced to expected professional behavior (confidentiality, patient safety, etc.). Students will be paired with healthcare workers at a specific hospital and will work with them throughout the apprenticeship.
